Fundamental Skills for a Supplier Relationship Manager

We get asked what skills should a supply relationship manager have in order to be successful.  To answer this, we will breakdown the skills into three main categories and some sub-categories beneath them.

Relationship Management Skills

This is about being approachable and communicative.  It also is about having strong change management and project management skills and knowing how to navigate action plans and escalations to successful completion.

Performance Management Skills

This is about understanding how to use data to monitor performance.  Both operational data and survey data come into play here.  It is also about understanding risk and how to manage all aspects of it throughout the supplier life cycle.

Process Management Skills

This is about understanding core elements of supplier processes that are needed for compliance and day-to-day oversight.  These include contract management, document management, spend management and contact management.  A firm grasp on these skills will mitigate risk and increase accountability.
